Badminton Estate

Badminton is one of the defining estates in British equestrian life.

Home to the Duke and Duchess of Beaufort, the estate’s history runs far deeper than the celebrated Horse Trials alone. For centuries, it has been shaped by horsemanship, hunting country and aristocratic heritage, with the Beaufort Hunt and generations of life on the land leaving their mark on the estate. Its significance extends beyond the equestrian world, with longstanding ties to Britain’s wider social and royal history.

For guests, that means riding through the avenues, parkland and private ground of an estate whose identity has been shaped over generations by horses and riders, in the company of Mary King MBE, whose own story is deeply connected to this place.

Mary King MBE

Mary King MBE is one of the most respected and recognisable figures in British eventing. Across a career spanning decades, she has represented Great Britain at the highest level, with Olympic, World and European Championship medals to her name.

Her connection to Badminton is particularly deep: twenty-two appearances at the Horse Trials and two victories have made her one of the riders most closely associated with the estate.

For guests, that means far more than simply meeting a celebrated name. Throughout the weekend, there is the opportunity to ride with Mary across the estate and share meals and conversation with someone whose warmth, humour and generosity are as much a part of the experience as her record in the saddle.

The Riding Experience

Horses are beautifully schooled, forward-going and carefully matched to each guest, ensuring a harmonious ride throughout.

Routes lead through private areas of the estate, taking in open parkland, historic tracks and stretches that echo the world-famous eventing course. Natural features that reflect the character of the estate may be incorporated, always with the emphasis on flow, enjoyment and the pleasure of the ride rather than technical challenge.

The riding is expertly guided and designed for competent, balanced riders. Throughout, Mary brings the estate vividly to life — recalling the lines, approaches and atmosphere of competition, transforming each ride into something far richer than simply covering ground.

Wow what a fantastic long weekend I have just shared with Sara Cox , Liberty Trails ( Elaine and the magnificent team ) and my fellow riders ! From start to finish this is better than any Christmas Day feeling . The horses are top quality and so well cared for . The Dartmoor Derby was a once-in-a-lifetime treat for me. It lived up to, and indeed, surpassed, all my expectations. I was given three gorgeous horses to ride who were all, fit, well-mannered and forward going, and I really enjoyed riding each one. They all coped with the challenging terrain of Dartmoor beautifully. Riding different horses each day was excellent and kept the challenge fresh. The complex logistics of each day felt calm and seamless. I loved meeting everyone in the whole group, and I hope I'll stay in touch with many of them in future. Being at Bovey Castle was the cherry on the cake, and it was wonderful to be able to swim and use the spa at the end of a long day's riding!
