When a wonderful guest called Nancy first visited us a while back for an exclusive Saddle, Spa and Castle ride, she realised she’d found something special and promised to return with two of her best horsey friends, who live in Germany. Last week we were able to welcome Nancy, Ottilie and Helmut in GLORIOUS weather — three friends who have been on many riding adventures together around the world. While the South East of England basks in a heat wave, Dartmoor is high enough always to be that few degrees cooler — though we’ve made full use of our specially adapted Land Rover with its wonderful rooftop awning.
We put together a very special tailor made holiday for Nancy, Ottilie and Helmut including nights at two of the most charming hotels on Dartmoor with absolutely brilliant cooking, and took them for three sensational days riding on Dartmoor. The ladies rounded off with well deserved sports massages in their room.
Helmut tells us he sets high standards about the horses he rides on riding trips and quite often asks for a replacement mount if the one he’s given disappoints. Happily he LOVED his mount… We could not have had more fun riding, teasing, even singing during our time with these three – and we’re so delighted that you are planning your return…

Octavia Pollack from Country Life Magazine explains that to ride across Dartmoor with one of Britain’s top riders is an unimagined delight, especially when they are as friendly as Mary King MBE. She recalls having a poster of Mary riding King William in the first of her two Badminton wins and had adored her as a child. Yet, within moments of meeting her, she felt as if she had known her personally for years, such is Mary’s warmth.
